Jacques Cartier
Have you ever heard of a man named Jacques Cartier? I have and I am doing him for my social studies project. He was born on December 31, 1491. He was born in St. Malo, France. He has had three voyages to different places throughout his life. He was a French navigator and explorer. He was the first European to travel inland of North America. He claimed Canada for France which is why they speak french in Canada too. He was married to Mary Catherine Granches. He died on September 1, 1557.He died in he same place where he was born. This is Jacques’ life and his amazing journeys.
He had three amazing different voyages. The first began in 1532. He traveled with Giovanni da Verrazzano to the eastern coast of North America which was South Carolina to Nova Scotia. This proved his ability to lead ships to discover new lands of the new world. He discovers great quantity of gold. He also discovers the Golf of St. Lawrence. He stopped at Illes aux Oiseaux which is now island of the birds and there they slaughtered around 1000 birds, most were Great Auks which are now extinct. The first encounter with people is with the Mikmaq, minimal trading occurred. The second encounter 50 longboats are piled around his boat. So this is what had had happened in the first voyage.
In 1535, is when the second voyage had occurred. They took three ships, 110 men, and two native boys. He reached St. Lawrence for the first time. He left his main ships in a harbour and used the smallest ship to countine up the river. They had met many native people on the way. The expedition couldn't proceed no futher because it was blocked by rapids. He realized that the rapids were preventing him from reaching China. After that, they turned around and went up the St. Charles river. The river was frozen soild at the mouth of the river with snow over the icesailing. They continued back to France in early May. Luckly, they were able to break the ice and continue up the river. This is what happened on the second voyage.
The third voyage had happened in 1541. He had sailed off with five ships. The goal now was to reach the " Kingdom of Saguenay " and its riches and to establish a permanent settlement along the St. Lawrence river. He decided to settle in present day Cap- Rouge , Quebec. A fort was created to over look the settlement for pretection. They had thought to have found gold and diamonds but really was fools gold and diamonds. When trying to go back, he was stopped by the bad weather and terrible rapids. He went another way and crossed the coast of the Newfoundlands. He returned back with him still think that he had diamonds and gold. So this is what had happened on the third voyage.
He spent the rest of his life in St. Malo. He died aged 65 or 66 on September 1 , 1557 from an epidemic. No permanent European settlements were made in Canada before 1608 , when Samuel Chaimplain found Quebec City . One monument is Cartier Place in Montreal . Another is the Jacques Cartier River . Another is Jacques Catier Bridge . Another is Jacques Cartier State Park . Another is the Cartier Povilian . The last is the Jacques Cartier Monument . This is Jacques Cartier's life .
