Samuel De Champlain

Champlain was on a voyage with a friend who was Francois Grave Du Pont. He had no official assignment on that voyage though. So he decided to draw a detailed map of the St. Lawrence River. Then when he returned to France he published his map. Soon Henry the fourth saw the map and wanted another one of a different place. Soon he met up with Samuel de Champlain. He then made him promise to make another map and he joined a new voyage where he made more maps.  So He became an explorer because of his nicely detailed maps.

Samuel De Champlain went on many voyages. In total he went on at least 5 or more trips. Most of them were from France and back. The trips took 2 years or less. It really depends on the weather and how bad it was at sea. He was really good at navigating and drawing maps. He had to be a good navigator too so he could keep track of where he is.

The voyages at sea for him were very hard. They had no fresh vegetables or fruits. It was all sour. Even the preserved meat tasted horrible. All his voyages were very successful. It wasn’t too hard on the crew. Well since he survived it he must have had a pretty fair voyage not counting the weather.

The first thing he saw was a large group of small huts. After exploring the land for a while they met the natives who looked like they were from the New World. They found a lot more trees. The trees were good to use to make windmills, homes, and even boats. They had a lot more water that was easier to get too. The wildlife was different and is gathered more quickly.

When he returned home for the first time he was a hero. He was loved and admired for finding colonies. Especially one whose trade was very valuable. They were harder to find in Europe or in Asia. They had different foods, better resources, and nice baskets, jewelry, and moccasins. Except on his last return as a prisoner of war he was considered a hero still but he felt defeated and later died of a stroke.
